At times, our complexion becomes too flushed, pale or even a blemish may be noticeable, and it becomes hard to hide it. However, thanks to the color correcting techniques we can now hide the problems. The main aim of colour correcting is to cancel opposite hues depending on your skin tone. By use of a concealer, we can hide the blemishes and dark circles as well as highlight the eyes and cheekbones.

Concealers initially were manufactured in shades similar to our skin tones, but now different colours such as pink, purple, green, white, are being brought in by the makeup industry. Each shade is used to conceal a specific issue, but you have to understand which colour corrects, which shade of blemish, so that you can attain perfection. If you’ve got the colour correcting basics, then you will master the art of concealer. Remember the color wheel at school? A color that is opposite the other will help conceal the alternate colour. e.g. colour green and red.

Some examples include:
· A green concealer will neutralize a red blemish e.g. from sunburn
· A purple, lilac or blue concealer, is best for removing the yellow undertones in the skin, or  dull yellow complexions
· A full coverage concealer that is true to your skin tone or orange based concealers are best for dark skins wanting to hide dark circles or spots with deep discoloration.
· A concealer, which is no more than two shades lighter than your natural skin tone, is great for highlighting your cheekbones, from the bridge to the tip of your nose, or can be utilized in the inner corners of the eyes so that you appear more awake. This is a great way to draw attention away from those areas that tend to be blemish prone.

Colour correcting is a great technique and if not overdone it brings out a real, neutral and even skin tone. If you want glam on certain days concealer, in a triangular shape when applied under the eye, gives you that bright and sun kissed focal point. A highlighter on your cheekbone adds even more glamour to the glam factor.

Make sure you get the right colour and consistency in what you are looking to hide. There are different concealers for the different types of skin e.g.
· Liquid concealer- best for normal, oily, sensitive and breakout prone skin types as it offers buildable coverage.
· Cream concealer- best for normal, dry, sensitive or combination type of skin as it gives medium to full coverage due to its thick texture.
· Stick concealer- best for normal, dry and sensitive skin and they work well to cover moderate to severe under eye circles.
· Cream to powder concealer- best for normal to combination type of skins.

Last but not least. The best way to apply your colour correction products is to apply your foundation first, get as much coverage out of that, then go in and correct/conceal, using a tapping/stippling motion (be it with a sponge, brush or fingers), ensuring the layer is not too thick for a natural finish.
